Abstract

These memories, written by R. Hayyim Simhah Leiner, preface the family history he compiled and first published in 1909. The grandfather of his childhood is Rabbi Yaʻakov Leiner, whose teachings are the subject of this book. R. Yaʻakov (1818-1878) was the rebbe and spiritual leader of a community of Hasidim in Izbica and then in Radzyn, located in the Podalski region of Congress Poland for over 24 years ... The discourses and insights he shared throughout his life were gathered by his sons and grandson in four large volumes entitled Beit Yaʻakov (The House of Jacob.))

Abstract

You pray it. But do you understand it? The Lord's Prayer has become so familiar to us that we don't think about what we're praying. It's a portrait of Jesus' heart. And in it Christians from different times, places, and traditions have been united. We pray it, but do we actually believe it? When Jesus taught his followers how to pray, he emphasized how uncomplicated it should be. There's no need for pretense or theatrics. Instead, simply ask for what you need as though you were speaking with your earthly father. This opens a window into Jesus' prayer life and presents us with a portrait of his heart for his followers. Wesley Hill re-introduces the Lord's Prayer. He shows us a God who is delighted to hear prayer. Petition by petition, in conversation with the Christian tradition, he draws out the significance of Jesus' words for prayer today. --

Abstract

This is a reflection on the teachings of Abraham Joshua Heschel, a teacher to an entire generation of rabbis. Breslauer looks at Heschel as an "ethical scholar," a teacher of both Jewish and non-Jewish traditions, and a Jewish Kabbalah mystic. The book addresses Heschel's concern that a spiritual crisis existed for all religions. In particular, Breslauer's examination of Heschel's development of the "depth-theology" concept to address the spiritual crisis is the central focus of this book. Breslauer draws attention to Hesechel's use of Jewish tradition and his understanding of God, not as a ph

Abstract

A collection of essays which reflects the author's skills and her ability to communicate and educate on a variety of levels. Her writing is informative and inspiring, passionate and poignant and ranges from the comic to the tragic, all frequently peppered with personal insights and anecdotes. Critical family issues such as childlessness and matriarch are sensitively covered alongside issues of death and burial. Sometimes there are vignettes such as her account of the funeral conducted by her youthful father for a bird he accidentally killed. In sum, this collection provides a sweeping overview of Jewish life and culture as viewed through the eyes of an academic who is also a woman, equally at home in the real world and the ivory tower.
